War Museum at Thessaloniki, Greece

September 2014

Every year my school organizes an excursion with graduation classes in Northern Greece. Since this year I have graduation classes I went with them. One day is always planned for visiting Thessaloniki. Since I am not interested in shopping I made some research on the Internet and found what I had been looking for - the War Museum!

The War museum is located some 50m from Egnatia Street which is the main street in Thessaloniki and everyone knows it. Since there is quite a chance that there is no War Museum on your Thessaloniki map you should know that it is very near Thessaloniki Fair. Once you see the barbwire on the walls of the nearby military base you know that you are in the right place.

The first impressions come from the courtyard. I have to say that military “touch“ is obvious since everything is so orderly, the grass is mowed and the exhibits are shiny. In the center of the courtyard dominates Northrop F-5 from the Greek Air Force , but there is also an armoured car, a couple of jeeps, a torpedo and some artillery and anti tank guns. The building is very nice and freshly painted. So, my students and I went in.

We were welcomed by a Greek soldier. He was very kind and after consultation with his supreme officer they allowed my students to visit the museum free of charge! I asked for a guide and then the other soldier named Dimitrios came and took us for a tour. I must say that Dimitrios has a remarkable knowledge of history, speaks English very well and has an exceptional gift for narration. So, when you come, you should definitely take a guide (it is free) since only this way you get the maximum of the museum.

What you can see in the building is plenty of different military equipment such as weapons and uniforms; documents, maps, paintings, newspaper articles, caricatures, dioramas and so on. Most of the exhibition is of course dedicated to the Greeks, but you can find many things that belonged either to their enemies or allies like the Turks, Bulgarians, Italians, Germans, British, Russians, Serbs and others.

We started the tour from the almost five centuries long Greek struggle for freedom against the Ottoman Empire. After many unsuccessful uprisings came the First and Second Balkan War in which Greece was finally liberated from the Ottoman Empire and formed the state with the present borders. Greece was involved in World War I without its will trying to remain neutral but finished it on the Allied side.

The main part of the exhibition is dedicated to WWII and heroic struggle against the Italians in 1940-1941 and later the Germans. Among all the uniforms and weapons there are books with the names of all killed Greek soldiers, pilots and marines as well as exhibits concerning some war heroes and their act. After the WWII Greek Army was involved in Korean war (on American side) and in humanitarian missions in former Yugoslavia so there are photos and exhibits concerning this.
Going this way you get a well documented history of Greek army and people in the last two centuries. But at the lower part of the museum there are other things to see like a collection of small fire arms and traditional dresses.

My students and I had a wonderful time at the museum. Everything was great. The excursion lasts for one hour and that is brilliant. Adults pay 3 Euros for entrance, but as I said, my students did not pay anything. For some categories of visitors the entrance fee is 1,5 Euros. They allowed us to take photos freely but without a flash. The notes on exhibits are written in the Greek, English, Russian and German languages I think, but with a guide you do not really need to read them. This War museum is definitely a must see when you visit Thessaloniki.

Gaming Day - Ljubljana, 27.09.2014

Anže pomiče svoje Pume ili nešto slično...

Carius in Slovenia

Prije sukoba…

Nikada nisam pisao komentare prije odigranih bitaka. Idem i to pokušati.

Schwere Panzerjagerkompanie.

Ako se branim imam odlične 8.8cm FK43 topove (AT 16, RoF 2, FP 3+).

Imam i tri mala 3.7cm AA topa sjajnih karakteristika (RoF 4, AT 6, FP 4+) i koštaju samo 65 bodova.

Ta promjena me košta 5 bodova manje na listi.

Uz brzo kretanje imaju i odlično vatrenu moć.
Arado košta 5 bodova više, znači dođe me 110 bodova. Obadva aviona imaju 3 kockice (Sporadic Air Support).

Kako smo došli i prije 9 sati, morali smo popiti kavu u obližnjem kafiću.

Slika 02 (moja lista)

Bacamo i misiju, igramo Free-for-all. On napada. Naizmjenično postavljamo vodove, on kreće prvi.

 Slika 03

Postižem hit, AT 17 na Side Armor 8, on nema mogućnost spašavanja tenka… meni treba 2+ za uništenje… bacam dovoljno i Konigstiger gori.

Igrom sam zadovoljan.

Tom

I za kraj par fotki...

Marchi postavlja teren, Anže se razbuđuje...
Jure kao nešto radi...
Anže i Edo poziraju prije bitke...
Kada loše krene, pomažu samo SLO zelene kockice :)
Poziranje za blog...
Malo smo mutni nakon nekoliko piva... Anže je sretan iako je upravo izgubio jedini vod pješadije...

Friendly game at Zmaj club by Dule

Eastern Front 1485 pts.
Soviet Motostrelkovy Guards (Dule) vs.
Romanian Vanatori Motorizata Elite (Pedja)
Mission: Cauldron (Mobile battle)
Mission Special rules: Immediate Ambush, Prepared positions, Reserves, Delayed Reserves and Random Deployment
Friendly game at Zmaj club.

Pedja is a very experienced player and he had 10 platoons and an airplane! I had only 6 platoons and I was the attacker. I did not play often with motostrelkovy but somehow I thought that my list had potential. I had a large platoon of infantry and a very good platoon with four KV tanks. The remaining four platoons were mediocre, but in the game you never know. I have decided, for the first time, to take a platoon of 6 medium mortars with an observer for 110 pts. That was something new for me but I wanted to have something against enemy PaKs that are so often deadly for my armour. I did not take any AA and I felt sorry for that the same moment I saw that Romanians had limited Stuka support. Romanians had five platoons on the table and five in delayed reserves and I deployed two motostrelkovy platoons and a mortar platoon and left three mobile platoons in reserves. Pedja rolled the dice for his platoon ratings and, as far I can remember, rolling was mediocre, so the platoons were typically reluctant/veterans. They knew how to fight but did not have will to do so.

Romanians had the first move and they have decided to move, and then shoot and assault my small motostrelkovy platoon that was hiding in the woods! That was a surprise for me since I was expecting them to wait in their trenches for me to attack. Previously, PzIII tanks easily pinned down my motostrelkovy and then Romanian infantry assaulted. In the war nothing goes as expected, so motostrelkovy managed to survive, counterattack and destroy many Romanian teams so that they had to test platoon moral and fled. I have unexpectedly killed one platoon. But there were 9 left and I still did not earn the point.

I moved as far as possible to remain in the woods but to be close to objective.

On the other side of the table I had a very large platoon of motostrelkovy. I have decided not to wait and to come as close as possible and to try to take an objective.

But Romanians started to shoot at me with artillery, PaKs and infantry and I started to lose more and more teams. In a few turns I had to test morale and failed. Since PzIII tanks already destroyed the previously mentioned small motostrelkovy platoon I already lost 2 platoons, CC and 2iC, and things started to look very bad for motostrelkovy.

Meanwhile, I received some reserves. They came automatically since I could not roll five ups. So, I had three platoons on the table. The road to the objective was pretty clear and my tanks were going straight for it.

Romanian reserves started to arrive too, light tanks and cavalry. I got BA-64 platoon from reserves and decided to use it to destroy cavalry. My mortars killed PaKs! And that was crucial to give my tanks a chance to take the objective.

I have learned something in this game. Artillery has to turn guns towards the platoon at which shoots. In our home games we have never done that. Unfortunately for me, they had one KV tank in line so they have started to bombard my tanks. I killed the Romanian cavalry. At that moment, everything seemed to be on my side - I was on the objective, already killed 3 platoons... But Pedja managed to somehow deny the objective all the time, with either PzIII or infantry. And he started to bring his reserves fast.

Romanians did not have luck with their air support. They either did not appear or my tanks managed to save.  On the far right there was an interesting battle between BA-64s and Romanian infantry. Ba-64s assaulted and managed to destroy another infantry platoon. I have decided to consolidate 4" more to meet other platoons. That was a mistake that almost cost me the game...

I have decided to shoot at PzIIIs with everything and destroyed them and another infantry platoon. There was no-one left to deny the objective!

The Romanians had one last assault. They destroyed BA-64s and if they managed to destroy another platoon, like medium mortars, they would have won, since I would have automatically failed company moral (3 of 6 platoons already destroyed, no CC, no 2iC). Romanians assaulted with everything they had, but mortars managed to survive. They were badly wounded, many of them killed, so they had to test platoon morale, which they did successfully and remained on the table. The game was over, and motostrelkovy won 4:3.

This was a very interesting game with many turnovers. I think that Romanians risked too much when they took the chance with the first-turn assault. On the other side, had they succeeded, I would have lost one motostrelkovy and very soon the mortar platoon and since my reserves were not arriving the game could have ended very quickly. I made a mistake with BA-64s chasing the infantry. I should have brought them back to stay close to mortars and provide defensive fire. It was a very bloody game with 5 Romanian and 3 Soviet platoons destroyed. Two motostrelkovy platoons died heroically taking all enemy fire to their chests so that their comrades in tanks could reach the goal.

Sitting Ducks by Dorian

Good morning!

Dorian here with a short tutorial on how to make some ridiculously cheap, yet decent looking objectives for Flames of War.

First, let me preface this by saying that I am always in favour of the neatly and intricately modelled objectives. However, in my experience, these usually tend to blend in with the terrain a bit too much, and are easily overlooked during gameplay. On the other hand, objectives bearing the insignia of your formation tend to stick out pretty blatantly.

Battlefront already offers a range of these, but their range is far from comprehensive, and the price is pretty steep for three rectangular pieces of clear plastic with print. I normally love Bettlefront’s gaming accessories, I just find these quite overpriced and somewhat incomplete.

This incited me to create my own, representing all the army formations I have, and I have later appended the project in order to add some friends’ requests.

I went about the Internet and gathered appropriate pictures and then formatted and compiled them in Corel. The file posted here is in still in Corel, so some of you might not be able to see it at home, but it will allow you to select what you want to print. Here is a thumbnail of all the objectives present in the file:

The file has four pages with fifteen objectives per page on the first three pages. The last page only features objectives for Great War and Arab-Israeli War. In order to turn the file into objectives you can use in the game, you would need to download the file and bring it to a photocopying or print shop. Most of those tend to have Corel. There you can select which objectives you want to print, and rearrange the pages accordingly. For the rest of the text, I will just assume you would like to print everything.

Ask the print shop attendant to print the whole file twice (to get two copies of each objective) without duplex or scaling (As in document) on 300g matt coated paper using a colour laser printer at 600 dpi. Once this is done, ask them to matt laminate the paper on both sides. This should result in eight A4 pages of 0.5mm thick plasticard. This is the most expensive step, and in my town it cost just a bit more than 7EUR to complete. To put things into perspective, this is 7EUR for one hundred objective markers.

Now comes the tedious part…

Safety warning: DO NOT perform the following step in a room recently cleaned by your wife. This can cause severe irritability (of the aforementioned wife) and in turn substantial amounts of commotion and distress.

You need to cut out all one hundred tokens. This can take some time and cause quite a lot of mess while tidying the corners. After finishing this, you are good to go!

Personally, I like to add one more, optional, step – black lining the sides. I used a standard black marker for this. Beware that the paper between the plastic is prone to soak in some of the black paint causing paint bleeds, but this looks quite good with the weathered look of most objectives.

As you can see I have included objective markers for Great War and Arab-Israeli War, and even some peculiar ones like Yugoslav Partisans, but left out markers for Vietnam. This is mainly because there is not much call for it around these parts. They might be available in an updated version.

Good luck and have fun!
